Make Your Own Fruit Leather at Home

This homemade fruit leather is awesome. It's super easy to make, tastes great, and as an added bonus it will make your house smell wonderful as it cooks.

I've made this recipe with strawberries as well as apples and both work great. Don't worry when it comes out of the oven and the surface looks rough or uneven. Once it is cool and you peel it off the baking sheet, the side that was face down will be smooth and shiny as pictured above. Depending on how you like your fruit leather, you can cook this less or more so it is more sticky and chewy or harder in consistency.

Ingredients

  • 4 to 6 cups apples, cored
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave
  • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Wash apples and cut into chunks, removing the core. The apple skin can stay on so long as you have a blender capable of blending them into a smooth consistency.
  3. Add all ingredients to blender. Blend until consistency is smooth with no lumps. If it is too think, add more water 1 tablespoon at a time. The consistency should be similar to a thin apple sauce, runny but not watery.
  4. Line two baking sheets with a silpat or parchment paper. Spray with cooking spray.
  5. Pour fruit leather mixture onto baking sheets, using a spatula to spread out the mixture evenly along the baking tray.
  6. Bake fruit leather until it is no longer sticky or tacky to the touch. Depending on your oven and the thickness of the mixture, this may take longer or shorter than the estimated 4-5 hours.
  7. Once the mixture is no longer sticky, allow it to cool, then remove from the baking sheet and cut into strips. For storage, wrap the strips with parchment to prevent sticking.
